Starting our Blog!

In this forum we are going to be updating you, our amazing followers, with all things from brand updates, product information, styling tips, and whatever else we feel like talking about. It's going to be super casual and awesome, and fun for us to try something new.

For our first blog post, just to keep it simple, we're going to talk about how Mars Clothing started, what we sell, and what it means to us. Mars began in 2011 as a pop-up shop for the holiday season in Thunder Bay, across from Intercity Mall. The original opening spot was supposed to be in the Bay/Algoma area, but plans fell through and something needed to be done to keep the business on track. Originally, this location was to be a temporary residence for the products while store designs were confirmed elsewhere. Business was great, and things were moving along to have a new location open in the downtown Waterfront District. In the summer of 2012, the new store was officially opened for business downtown. It's been eight years and counting, and we are looking forward to new opportunities and what the future might hold for Mars.

We like to say that what we have is perfect for first dates and job interviews, or a cozy night of binge watching Friends with your favourite snack and adult beverage. Some of our marquee brands include Naked & Famous Denim, Colorful Standard, Herschel Supply Co, and Minimum Fashion. We try to do our part in the responsibility and sustainability effort by bringing in brands with products that support ethical and responsible practices, such as using 100% organic cottons and offering a living wage. Many of our products are made in Canada as we try to support the national economy. You can never go wrong shopping at Mars Clothing.

As for what mars means to us, it's more than just a clothing store where we work. For James, it's like his child, he loves it with all his heart and it's a dream come true. He says "This is an opportunity for me to meet people who are interested in the fashion and style industry and are part of the community. I've made new friends, realized my dreams of being a clothing store owner, and created a safe space where people can come shop and chat, judgement free."
As for myself, I've only been here about a year and a half now, but the people I've met, the lessons I've learned about business, and the experience I've gained from being here will most certainly stick with me forever. After spending the last 5-6 weeks here without James, I have really gotten to know more of the people in the community and learned the ins-and-outs of local business in Thunder Bay. Mars is more than just a workplace for me, it's like a little downtown family with all the other local businesses supporting each other.
